a photographic interlude

I haven't posted in a while in part because I've been entertaining and in part because I wrote a long post about my mixed feelings about attending Mexican independence day celebrations.... and the ethernets ate it. So I intend to recreate it, but haven't yet. I'm off to LA tomorrow (gulp), loaded down with gifts from people here for family members in LA and with an invitation to a Oaxacan wedding in LA for Sunday.

And in the meantime, here are some pictures of the amazing night lights/ sky here

There was an incredible full moon last night that came out after a light rainstorm and looked like someone was shining a spot light on it.

But then there's something about the sky-angle of my street that often lends itself to amazing afternoon formations. Yesterday afternoon was one of those amazing light moments after a hot dry day where the "magic hour" light is amazingly flat and luminescent.
My friend/ neighbhor J's grandmother was visiting for three weeks and the four of use wandered around the Camino Real one evening before she left.
The Camino Real is considered the fanciest hotel in Oaxaca and it was a former convent, then jail, and maybe military barracks as well. It was sold to a major hotel chain in the 90s, but because of its historical significance, it's considered part of the cultural patrimony of all Mexicans and all its public areas are accessible to anyone. In practice, it's much much easier for me to enter and take pictures in the patios than for a Triqui woman selling chiclets on the street.
My favorite part of the Camino Real is tucked back in a side patio, an old washing spring that now has this amazingly smooth patina... demonstrating yet again that the utilitarian becomes the aesthetic.
